One person's hands loosely clasped

An Ode to My Hands

These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

When just a babe I used my hands
To grasp and grab and pull.
We learned together, hands and I,
Though often covered in drool.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

When as a youth I climbed a tree
Or rode a bike or read a book,
My hands use that grasp and pull
So I’d not fall or help me look.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

We learned to drive, my hands and I,
Learned blinkers, levers, wheel;
We worked on chores and homework too
And how to make a meal.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

We held another’s hands in ours,
I used my hands to write,
And when a tiny hand joined ours,
We held its fingers tight.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

I have at times abused my hands
And worked them far too much;
But I would never dare forget
How much I need their touch.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

I use my hands to interact;
Without them I would be
A mere observer, I would lack
Change’s capacity.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.

One day these hands and I will grow
Older, shrunken, sore.
But I hope that I will still learn
To appreciate them more.
These hands have done so much for me;
Dear hands, just know I appreciate thee.
